La Vila Vella

A place that you cannot miss visiting, if you are a lover of medieval and ancient history, is Vila Vella, a national historical-artistic monument surrounded by walls, and a unique example of a fortified medieval town that still exists on the Catalan coast. . Its construction dates from the beginning of the 13th century.

The walls consist of four towers and three cylindrical towers surmounted by machicolations. The most famous of these towers are the Torre d'en Jonás, which dominates the bay; the Torre de las Heures, located near the entrance to the parade ground, which owes its name to the fact that it was the only place where there was a public clock; and the Torre d'es Codolar, or Homage Tower, which dominates the Codolar beach.

Chapel of the Verge dels Socors

Chapel of the Verge dels Socors

In its beginnings, the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Help was located in a lonely place in the suburb, but over time it became a key point for the development of the urban center.

This beautiful chapel, built in the 16th century as an ex-voto for the merchant Antoni Caixa, is an expression of gratitude to Our Lady for having saved him from a shipwreck. It was in the 18th century when a careful restoration was carried out that gave it its current appearance. Since then, the chapel has been venerated by fishermen and merchants, who have deposited their devotion in it and have found in this place an important center of the religious life of the town.

Beyond its historical and religious importance, the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Help transcends as a symbol of faith and hope for all those who visit it.

Parish Church of Sant Vicenç

Parish Church of Sant Vicenç

This neoclassical parish church was built in 1775 because the old church of Sant Vicenç, in Vila Vella, had become too small for the growing number of parishioners.

The church is very simple as a whole, but it stands out for the grandeur of its central nave. Originally it was decorated with various altars and images in the popular Baroque style, mostly made in the local Cas Fuster workshop, but this valuable heritage was burned down during the Civil War, with the exception of the altar of the Immaculate Conception, which is still preserved.
